Welcome Spring! What a winter, right? We Minnesotans love to talk about our crazy winter weather, this past winter being one the snowiest on record. That just means an even greater yearning to get our hands in the dirt and watch some color pop out of the earth! Seriously like a miracle every year. We love it so much and hope you do too.
Dr. Leonard is in typical form, trying to wait until a reasonable date to start the dahlia bulbs, but impatience wins every time. He started the bulbs in his underground greenhouse on March 25th. Which is a few days later than last year.
The reason we were trying to wait a week or two is that with the plant food and high quality soil that Dr. Leonard uses, his dahlias start getting too big for greenhouse, before the soil has warmed up enough outside, to plant them directly into the soil.
As you can see in the photo, this is EXACTLY what is happening right now. It’s a JUNGLE in the greenhouse!
So, we’ll transplant them into big plastic pots in May and let them weather out a few weeks until the ideal planting temperatures have been reached.
Meanwhile, Dr. Leonard has planted some tomatoes and basil in his greenhouse and we have already planted lettuce and peas outside in the vegetable garden.
Thank you for reading our blog and stay tuned for more photos and updates as the summer gets rolling!
